The Vintage Collection

Shortly after the relaunch of the Vintage collection, I was tasked with leading the development of the heritage scale. During my time on the segment, I worked to identify our existing tooling library, as well as build out our VLPs for introducing new characters into the line. One of the major initiatives for the line was our pledge to complete the original 96. This campaign was Hasbro’s pledge to release super-articulated representations of all of the original Kenner figures from the original toy line (1977-1985) on their original card backs.

Playsets Reimagined:

For years, playsets were not viewed as a viable investment for tooling despite world-building being a rich part of Star Wars history. During my time on the Vintage Collection, we began to introduce environmental mini sets that would act as vignettes for our figures. Through this platform we delivered, screen accurate designs, functioning featural elements, along with varying forms for modularity to allow for adaptable setups as well as encouraging repeat purchases.

Jabba’s Trophy Room:

Drafting off of the success of the Haslab Sailbarge, we put a lot of focus on Jabba and his Denizens. We revisisted a section of Jabba’s palace interior that enabled us to bundle this with some new 3.75” figures for the vintage colleciton. Scrubbing though the archives, we were able to match the details on the rear wall,, along with identifying and including the mounted heads of the Taun Taun and the Jerba. The trophy room gave us the opportuity to explore a magnetic lift mechanism to raise and lower the carbonite block centered on the rear wall. We also we able to include modular archways that could be removed and reoriented based on the characters that you wanted to interact with.

Bespin Carbon Freezing Chamber:

Aligning with the 40th anniversary of Empire Strikes back, we set out to deliver one of the most iconic environments from the film, the Carbon Freezing Chamber. This location had phenomenal contrast lighting and featured Luke's heroic lightsaber battle with Vader. We knew that we wanted to capture the silhouette and elevation changes in the product. The result was a multi-tiered platform with scaffolding and a functioning floor mechanism that could raise the carbonite from the freeze bay. We also molded the stairs and platform with a separate translucent orange panel beneath them to allow for illumination from the underside, to mimic the film’s lighting. In an effort to keep to playset in scale, we were only able to focus on half of the chamber, however, when two are connected together they form the complete platform.

Tantive IV Corridor:

Quite possible the most modular of all of the sets, was the Tantive Corridor. Modeled after the section of the hallway that we see at the beginning of A New Hope, The Tanitive Corridor can be infinitely expanded upon with repeat purchases. There is no limit to the number of hallways that can be paired together, and the end result is only limited by your imagination. The hallway’s walls, doors, and floors can all be repositioned based on your ideal setup, and intentionally offer the ability to leave sections open for display and photography. The doorways feature a functional slider, to mimic their function onscreen.
